How to Read This Scattergram
Each dot represents one applicant. Green dots are admitted students, red dots are rejected, and yellow dots are waitlisted. The shaded horizontal band marks the 25th to 75th percentile SAT range from Rice's Common Data Set.
Notice that admits are not perfectly separated from rejects. At a 8.7% acceptance rate, even strong-stats applicants get rejected — because holistic review weighs essays, recommendations, extracurriculars, and demonstrated interest heavily.
The dots below the band with green color? Those are likely “hooked” applicants — recruited athletes, legacy, underrepresented minorities, or students with extraordinary extracurriculars that offset lower test scores.
